Velocity dispersion in N-body simulations of CDM models

چکیده

This work reports on a study of the spatially coarse-grained velocity dispersion in cosmological N-body simulations (OCDM and ΛCDM models) as a function of time (redshifts z = 0–4) and of the coarsening length (0.6–20 hMpc). The main result is the discovery of a polytropic relationship I1 ∝ ̺ between the velocity-dispersion kinetic energy density of the coarsening cells, I1, and their mass density, ̺. The exponent η, dependent on time and coarsening scale, is a compact measure of the deviations from the naive virial prediction ηvirial = 0. This relationship supports the “polytropic assumption” which has been employed in theoretical models for the growth of cosmological structure by gravitational instability.

Spatial correlation function and pairwise velocity dispersion of galaxies: CDM models versus the Las Campanas Survey

We show, with the help of large N-body simulations, that the real-space two-point correlation function and pairwise velocity dispersion of galaxies can both be measured reliably from the Las Campanas Redshift Survey. The real-space correlation function is well fitted by the power law ξ(r) = (r0/r) γ with r0 = (5.06± 0.12) hMpc and γ = 1.862± 0.034, and the pairwise velocity dispersion at 1 hMpc...

Velocity fields in non–Gaussian cold dark matter models

We analyse the large–scale velocity field obtained by N–body simulations of cold dark matter (CDM) models with non–Gaussian primordial density fluctuations, considering models with both positive and negative primordial skewness in the density fluctuation distribution. We study the velocity probability distribution and calculate the dependence of the bulk flow, one–point velocity dispersion and ...

A New Statistic for Redshift Surveys: the Redshift Dispersion of Galaxies

We present a new statistic—the redshift dispersion— which may prove useful for comparing next generation redshift surveys (e.g., the Sloan Digital Sky Survey) and cosmological simulations. Our statistic is specifically designed for the projection of phase space which is directly measured by redshift surveys. We find that the redshift dispersion of galaxies as a function of the projected overden...

Cosmology using Cluster Internal Velocity Dispersions

We compare the cumulative distribution of internal velocity dispersions of galaxy clusters,N(> σv), for a large observational sample to those obtained from a set of N– body simulations that we run for seven COBE–normalized cosmological scenarios. They are: the standard CDM (SCDM) and a tilted (n = 0.85) CDM (TCDM) model, a cold+hot DM (CHDM) model with Ων = 0.25, two low–density flat CDM (ΛCDM)...

Galaxy Group Analysis -a Robust Discriminator between Cosmological Models: Cold + Hot Dark Matter and Cdm Confront Cfa1

We present techniques for identifying and analyzing galaxy groups and show that they provide a powerful and robust discriminator between cosmological models. We apply these methods to high-resolution particle-mesh (PM) N-body simulations of structure formation in three = 1 cosmological models; Cold plus Hot Dark Matter (CHDM) with cold = 0:6, = 0:3, and baryon = 0:1 at b=1.5 (COBE normalization...
